Did anyone else have “teddy grahams” at their school during Valentine’s Day? You’d send a graham to a friend and then on Valentine’s Day, the leadership class would hand them out to people. I was thinking back to how this was a fun way to show appreciation to friends back in the day.
Inspired by nostalgia, I thought I’d share a tutorial for some edible teddy bear Valentine cookies! These would be perfect for your Valentine’s Day party or to pack up in your kids’ lunch box!
Speaking of fun activities on Valentine’s Day, check out this post for activities, crafts, and recipes for Valentine’s Day this year! Sarah created this roundup post and she has a great blog as well! You can check that out at JourneyForJasmine.com.

Part 1: Gathering your Supplies for your Teddy Bear Valentine Cookies

To create these cute teddy bear Valentine cookies with buttercream frosting, you will want to gather:

You may be asking, “What are couplers?” Couplers allow you to change your tips on your icing bags. Check out my page, Getting Started: Learn How to Decorate Buttercream Cookies, to learn how to do this. Essentially, you will attach a coupler to each icing bag. When you need to attach a tip, just make sure to rinse out the previous color from the tip with hot water. Purchasing a set of couplers is pretty affordable on Amazon: 4 Count Wilton Coupler Set.

Part 2: Baking the Cookies and Setting up Your Icing Bags

  1. Roll, cut out, and bake your teddy bear Valentine sugar cookies according to your cookie dough recipe.
  2. While your cookies are cooling, make your buttercream frosting. Separate the frosting into 5 different bowls and add in the gel food dye to obtain your black, dark brown, light brown, and red frosting. You will be using the most dark brown and white frosting so you can adjust your amounts in the bowls accordingly.  As a tip, try to get your dark brown frosting as close to the shade of brown that your chocolate jimmies are. Remember, your frosting color will darken as it sits out and “crusts.”
  3. Set up your icing bags as follows: Place each color of frosting into their own icing bags, each with a coupler in it. If you aren’t sure how to do this, no worries, just hop over to my Getting Started: Learn How to Decorate Buttercream Cookies page. You do not need to add the tips to the couplers yet.
  4. Pour the chocolate jimmies into a shallow bowl or onto a plate.

Part 3: The Fun Part! Frosting Your Teddy Bear Valentine Sugar Cookies

  1. Your first step will be to outline and fill in the shape of your bear, leaving a square in the middle where it’s tummy would be. To do this, attach the tip #5 to your dark brown bag of frosting.
  2. Next, flip your teddy bear valentine cookie over and press it into your bowl of sprinkles. Get as many sprinkles as you can onto your cookie. Then, use your pointed knife to clean up the edges of square tummy and the outer edges of the bear.
  3. Remove/rinse/dry the tip #5 from your dark brown frosting and attach it to your light brown frosting. Squeeze out two dots in the center of the bear’s ears, a larger dot for the nose, and two smaller dots on top of the nose.
  4. Attach the tip #2 to your black frosting and place a small dot inside of each eye and a small triangle for the nose. Tip: create a triangle by squeezing out a dot and then use your pointed knife to pull the edges out into a triangle shape.
  5. Remove/rinse/dry the tip #5 from the light brown frosting and attach it to your white frosting. Outline and fill in the bear’s tummy area.
  6. Remove/rinse/dry the tip #2 from the black frosting and attach it to the red frosting. Write in the words, “I <3 U beary much.” If you aren’t familiar with writing with frosting, practice on parchment paper first. Then, scoop up the frosting from the parchment paper and place it back into your icing bag. If you make any mistakes while writing on the cookie, you can always “erase” it by picking up the frosting with your pointed knife. Teddy Bear Valentine Cookies
