My first baby has just turned four years old and he requested Baby Yoda sugar cookies for his “BB8 and Baby Yoda birthday party” as he called it.

While there are a lot of tutorials on social media for how to decorate Baby Yoda sugar cookies with royal icing, I haven’t found one for buttercream yet.

Baby Yoda Sugar Cookies for a Mandalorian Birthday Party

As some parents may have found out, many cookie decorators will not do character sugar cookies due to copyright infringement. I don’t blame them, as I wouldn’t sell copyright items either.

That being said, making Baby Yoda sugar cookies for your own child is the way to go. If you are completely new to buttercream sugar cookie decorating, please check out my online beginner cookie decorating class which goes over all the basics and tips for success.

With the popularity of the Mandalorian storyline among children, it seems appropriate to make these Grogu sugar cookies.

Part 1: Gathering the Supplies for the Baby Yoda Sugar Cookies

Baby Yoda Sugar Cookies

To decorate these Grogu sugar cookies, you will want to gather:

  • 3 Icing bags
  • 3 Couplers
  • One Wilton #1 tip, one Wilton #4 tip, and one Wilton #103 tip
  • Baby Yoda cookie cutter – I got mine here
  • Black, green, and brown gel food dye
  • Palette knife
  • Ingredients for a crusting buttercream & sugar cookie dough – found below in recipe card

Part 2: Baking the Cookies and Setting up the Icing Bags

  1. Roll, cut out, and bake your Baby Yoda sugar cookies according to the recipe.
  2. Make your buttercream icing and separate it into three bowls:
    • One bowl will contain about a quarter cup of the frosting; dye this bowl black or dark gray.
    • Separate the rest of the buttercream into two bowls; one will be dyed green and one brown.
  3. Set up your icing bags as follows:
    • Place a coupler into each bag and fill with buttercream. You do not need to attach any tips yet.

Part 3: Decorating the Baby Yoda Sugar Cookies

    1. Attach the tip #4 to the bag of frosting with the green buttercream. Outline and fill in Grogu’s head, minus the ears, with the frosting. It can be sloppy. Baby Yoda Sugar Cookies Green Piped Buttercream
    2. Use your palette knife to smooth Baby Yoda’s head. baby yoda sugar cookies smoothed buttercream face
    3. Repeat steps 1 & 2 on all of your Baby Yoda cookies before moving to the next step. Then, remove/rinse/dry the tip #4 from the green bag and attach it to the brown buttercream bag. Outline and fill in Baby Yoda’s clothes. Leave a space for the fluffy part of the outfit, as this will be added later. baby yoda sugar cookies piped brown outfit piping baby yoda cookies one step at a time

    5. Next, pipe the fluffy part and sleeves of the clothes by piping up and down quickly at an angle. This is a squished version of the “back and forth method” in my beginner cookie decorating class. baby yoda sugar cookies with fluffy outfit
    6. Complete steps 4 & 5 on all the cookies before moving to the next step. Then, remove/rinse/dry the tip #4 from the brown frosting and place it back onto the green frosting. Pipe Baby Yoda’s hands by squeezing a small dot of frosting under the sleeves. baby yoda sugar cookies piped green hands piping baby yoda cookies with buttercream frosting
    7. Once step 6 is completed on all of the cookies, replace the tip #4 on the green frosting with the tip #103. Pipe Baby Yoda’s ears by holding the tip about 45 degrees to the cookie with the skinny side of the tip angled up. Once you get to the end/point of the ear, pipe back to the head without rotating the tip. baby yoda cookies piping ears with petal tip baby yoda cookies piped ears completed
      • You can play around with the angle a bit to get the appearance you want or simply just pipe the ears like the head, using a tip #4 and smoothing it with a palette knife. You can also use a palette knife to manipulate the ears into more of a point when using the tip #103.
    8. Attach the tip #1 to the black frosting to outline and fill in the eyes. You can then smooth the eyes with the palette knife if you wish. baby yoda sugar cookies with piped eyes
    9. One step 8 is complete on all of the cookies, remove/rinse/dry the tip #1 from the black frosting and attach it to the green to pipe the eyelid over the top of the eye. Then, pipe a dot or small line for the nose. baby yoda cookies with piped eyelids

Equipment

  • Stand Mixer with Paddle Attachment
  • Rubber Spatula
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Medium Sized Mixing Bowl
  • Lined aluminum cookie sheet parchment paper or silicone baking sheet
  • Rolling Pin
  • Baby Yoda cookie cutter
  • 3 Icing bags with couplers in them
  • Wilton tip #1, #4, and #103
  • Palette Knife

Ingredients

Buttercream Frosting

  • ½ cup room temperature unsalted butter 4 ounces
  • ½ cup room temperature salted butter 4 ounces
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tbsp. vanilla extract
  • 1-3 tbsp. whole milk
  • black, green, and brown gel food dye

Sugar Cookies

  • 1 cup cold salted butter cubed
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 cups all purpose flour measured with the scoop & level method
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 egg
  • 1.5 tsp. vanilla extract

Instructions

  • Remove all of the butter from the refrigerator. You will make the sugar cookies first but the butter for the frosting needs to come to room temperature before mixing.

Sugar Cookies

  • Preheat the oven to 350℉ and prepare an aluminum cookie sheet by placing either parchment paper or a silicone baking mat on it.
  • In a medium sized mixing bowl, combine the flour and baking powder and mix together. Set this aside.
  • Cube a cup of salted butter and then, in a stand mixer with the paddle attachment, combine the cubed butter with the granulated sugar. Mix until creamed together well.
  • To the stand mixer, add in the egg and vanilla extract and mix until combined.
  • Slowly add in the dry ingredients in the mixing bowl to the stand mixer.
  • Roll the dough out to 3/8" thick and use the cookie cutters to cut out the cookies. Place the cookies onto the prepared baking sheet and bake for 9-11 minutes or until the tops of the cookies no longer look wet. When baking the cookies, only bake 6-8 cookies at a time to leave proper space between each cookie to cook without spreading. Overcrowding the cookie sheet will cause spread.

Buttercream Frosting

  • In a stand mixer with the paddle attachment, add the room temperature salted and unsalted butter and mix on high until light and fluffy.
  • Mix in the powdered sugar little by little. Add in the vanilla extract and milk about halfway through adding the sugar to help the frosting come together. Start with one tablespoon of milk and work up to three if needed, depending on the consistency you want. I like to aim for a peanut butter consistency or thinner.
  • Dye about a quarter cup of the frosting black or dark gray. Divide the rest of the frosting and dye half of it green and the other half brown. Place each color into an icing bag with a coupler.
